3 Tips to Start Your Spring DIY

My latest DIY -- Car Stereo Installation
I never saw myself as a DIY person. Growing up in an apartment, if something broke, we just called maintenance, and that was that. But now, as a homeowner and car owner, I’ve had to roll up my sleeves because I can’t always afford to hire someone to do the work. (Disclaimer: some things really do need a pro. No shame in asking for help.) Turns out, no one is born knowing how to do anything. Everyone had to learn somewhere. If they can learn, so can you. Here are three things I’ve learned in my journey as a DIY-er.
1. YouTube University
It’s amazing how much you can learn simply by watching YouTube. You don’t have to find a class or buy a book. People are pouring their knowledge out for free on YouTube. I’ve fixed my car, installed a stereo, learned how to edit video, and done home repairs all thanks to normal people with a camera and a desire to share. Important reminder: learning from YouTube is great but there *IS* a gap between knowing how to do something by watching someone else and being able to do it yourself. Gain some confidence but don’t get too confident. (This is the voice of experience!)

2. Read All the Instructions
In third grade, Miss Billingsley told us over and over again to “read ALL the instructions FIRST”. It was life-long wisdom that we will need in our new DIY life. Early stages of construction or repair can seem simple but it can get much harder down the line. Look at everything first to make sure you can finish it. (Jesus knew what He was talking about when He told us to “count the cost” in Luke 14.) This is yet another lesson I learned the hard (and expensive) way.
3. Google and Google Again
Never underestimate the power of a deep dive. After you read or watch one source, keep going. Different people bring different angles, and you’ll pick up new terms, tricks, or methods you hadn’t thought of. If something feels off or confusing, just Google it again and see what else is out there. Part of the goal of DIY isn’t just to get it done. You’re learning. Don’t be afraid to look at multiple sources.
Say it out loud: "I GOT THIS"
You’re way more capable than you think you are. Of course, you have to balance that with some humility, but don’t count yourself out. Grab some patience, some curiosity, some tools and all the determination you can muster. You might even have some fun.
P.S. - You won’t get everything right. That’s okay. Deep breaths. Try again. Mistakes will be part of the journey.
P.P.S. - I always start these DIY journeys with prayer. God is the ultimate creator and Jesus was literally a carpenter. Ask for wisdom and help. God handles the big things but He can help you with those IKEA shelves too.
