God Is In This Car

From: Obadiah HaybinUber drivers say the craziest things.
After a long, exhausting stretch in Orlando—running between a radio conference, preaching, doing stand-up comedy, and hitting Epic Universe—I was done. You know that kind of tired where your brain is still buzzing, but your body has officially clocked out? That was me.
I was looking forward to my ride to the airport. Airplanes are crowded and loud but my Uber would be all mine. Space. Quiet. Yes, please!
That’s not what I got.
“God Is in This Car”
Seconds after climbing into the car, my driver looked at me through the rearview mirror and said, “God is in this car with me tonight.”
Not exactly standard Uber small talk.
Something about it really caught me off guard. In a business where I’m supposed to know what to say, I was completely speechless.
“Obadiah, your name means ‘representative of God.’ That means God is in this car with me.”
Leonardo (my driver) was right. That is what my name means. But most people can pronounce, let alone know the history of my name. It wasn’t the last thing I expected to hear but it was close.
The Moment I Didn’t See Coming
God’s funny isn’t He? You aren’t expecting to hear from Him and He shows up in places you just don’t expect. I had a friend that called it the parochial southpaw. (It’s a weird reference but I had to make it. It’s a boxing and church metaphor that basically means being surprised because you didn’t see the hit coming.)
I wasn’t looking for anything profound that afternoon but there was the Holy Spirit speaking to me through a stranger and reminding me that I represent God. SO DO YOU.
*WE* represent God.
All the time.
In big moments and small ones, too.
You are a representative of God in every room you walk into, every conversation you have, every random Tuesday, and yes… even every awkward Uber ride.
So Here’s the Question
What if you walked into your day remembering that you represent God?
At work.
At home.
In traffic.
In line at the grocery store.
In that random conversation you didn’t ask for.
Not in a pressure-filled, “don’t mess this up” kind of way…
But in a quiet, steady awareness:
God is with me.
And how I show up matters.
Because you never really know when an ordinary moment is going to turn into something more.
