For this
Hot Mess segment, John from
Rock House responded to an email we received from Sarah about a problem that a lot of us have faced at some point.
Sarah's Email:
I’m a Christian, but I’m stuck in a glass half-empty mentality. It affects every part of my life, my attitude at work, and my relationships at home. No matter what I do, I just can’t seem to get out of that valley. I truly want to be a better person for my family….and I think that if I could have a better perspective, maybe I would like my job, too.
John's Response:
We don’t have all the information, but there are a lot of spiritual issues that can create this.
Back when I battled a lot of depression, it was based on a lot of lies that I believed about myself. I felt pretty empty on the inside because of the self-esteem issues I was facing.
We’ve also had clients that struggle with the belief of who God is. Many believe that God is someone who walks around with a clipboard, waiting for them to make that next mistake. It’s hard to tell in the short paragraph she sent, but she might be blaming God for some things.
We need God to be close to us to fill us with joy. But
if we’re blaming Him, we’re pushing Him further and further away. If we’re blaming God instead of trusting him, we’re trying to figure out how to get peace through our own strength.
When you’re in your own head trying to solve your own problems, it makes it worse. You’re isolated and alone, and it builds upon itself.
A lot of times, we don’t believe that the blood of Christ really covers everything. We think there’s still something we have to do to earn the Father’s love. That’s a huge burden, and that conditional acceptance is not what we need.
We have a divine need for unconditional love and unconditional acceptance that only God can fill. That’s important for our peace.
