Why I Couldn't Stop Crying at My Brothers' Wedding

From: Joy SummersHave you ever been completely happy for someone—and still felt your heart ache for the way things used to be?
Maybe you felt it while dropping your child off at kindergarten, taking family pictures at graduation or watching someone you love walk down the aisle. You were celebrating, but part of you also wanted to whisper, Wait. How did we get here so quickly?
I had one of those moments at my baby brother’s wedding last weekend.
I was honored to stand beside him and his wife as a bridesmaid, but for most of the day, it simply felt like another beautiful wedding. Then the first dance began.
My brother dipped his new wife, kissed her and danced around the floor like a Disney prince—to a Brandon Lake song and I completely lost it.
I didn’t just tear up. I started bawling.
Because even though I could see a grown man dancing with his wife, part of me could still see the little boy dressed like a cowboy, watching Toy Story over and over again.
I was eight years old when he was born, and I’ve acted like his second mom for most of his life. As I watched him dance, one thought kept running through my mind:
That little boy is somebody’s husband now.
I am incredibly happy for my brother and his new wife. This is a beautiful new beginning, and I’m so proud of the man he has become.
But if I’m honest, part of me also wished we could go back to being kids again.
That’s the strange thing about life: sometimes the moments we prayed for still carry a little sadness.
Maybe you understand that feeling.
Maybe your baby isn’t a baby anymore. Maybe the house that once felt loud and chaotic has become unexpectedly quiet. Maybe your family traditions look different now, or someone you love has stepped into a new season that changed your relationship too.
You’re grateful for what God is doing, but you still miss what used to be.
Missing an old season doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful for the new one. It simply means that what you had mattered.
The Bible says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).
Perhaps part of that wisdom is recognizing how precious our ordinary days are while we’re still living them. The movie marathons, family dinners, and the phone calls you assume you’ll always be able to make.
Life will keep changing. Children grow up. Families expand. People move. Relationships enter new seasons. We can’t stop any of it—but we can choose to be present for it.
Thankfully through every changing season God remains steady.
Maybe that’s why happy moments sometimes make us cry. Our tears hold all of it at once: the gratitude, the memories, the joy and the ache of realizing just how quickly time has passed.
So today, think about the season you’re in—the one you may someday wish you could revisit.
Who can you hold a little closer? What ordinary moment can you stop and notice? What can you thank God for before it becomes a memory?
Because somehow, we blink—and everything has changed.
